About the Case and Background
This page provides fuller background on Ahmad Yahya's life, political career, and the legal case that this campaign concerns. We believe supporters deserve a complete and honest picture.
Political career
Ahmad Yahya's career in public life spanned several decades and several political parties. He began as a secretary of state under Funcinpec, later joined the Sam Rainsy Party and was elected to represent Kampong Cham Province in the National Assembly in 2003, and in 2008 he joined the ruling Cambodian People's Party. He also served as a secretary of state at the Ministry of Social Affairs. Across these roles, he remained a leading voice for Cambodia's Cham Muslim community.
The legal case
In 2019, Ahmad Yahya was convicted on human trafficking charges connected to overseas labor recruitment, and was sentenced to 15 years in prison. The charges related to his company, a licensed labor recruitment business registered with the Ministry of Commerce, which placed Cambodian workers in overseas employment. His family maintains that this was lawful work and that he never knowingly took part in any exploitation.
His family and the Cham community believe the conviction was unjust. His defense also raised a serious legal concern: he was convicted under a 2008 law for conduct alleged to have taken place in 2004, before that law existed. On these grounds, Cambodia's Supreme Court ordered his case sent for retrial. This campaign calls for that retrial to be conducted fairly and transparently, where the evidence can be properly examined.
We encourage you to read about the case from independent sources as well, so you can reach your own conclusion. Our aim is not to ask you to ignore the charges, but to ask that the legal process that addresses them be fair.
